"It’s that one life is never enough. It’s something I’ve thought about a lot, how it must have been for people in the past. If you were a medieval villager in Somerset, say, and knew nothing beyond your immediate circumstances and had no education. That’s a cripplingly impoverished life because it doesn’t give you any insights into how other people may have lived in different times and places.
